DESCRIPTION OF THE PRINCIPALITY OF LUCEDIO

The Principality of Lucedio represents one of the most fascinating places in Italy, both for its millenary history and for its ancient rice fields, which even place it as the first rice producer in Italy. The origin of this place has its roots in the distant 1123, when some Cistercian monks, coming from Burgundy, founded an abbey here and reclaimed the surrounding area. Towards the fifteenth century, the reclaimed land was destined for rice fields, thus obtaining an important record in the cultivation of rice, and a real system of grange was created, or satellite farms in the area for agricultural production. Over time the monks became more and more powerful, to the point that they were even visited by three popes. Subsequently this complex and the relative system was the object of dispute between important dynastic houses: the first owners were the Gonzagas, then it passed to the Savoys, to be acquired, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, by Napoleon. After the Napoleonic parenthesis, it passed to the Marquis Gozani di San Giorgio, ancestor of the current owner, the Countess Rosetta Clara Cavalli d’Olivola Salvadori di Wiesenhoff.

Currently, the principality of Lucedio continues to be an important agricultural company, among the best producers of rice in Italy, and it associates tourist-cultural initiatives with the productive activity. The structures of the agricultural complex, the ancient Cistercian places and the cultivated fields can be visited, furthermore many rooms of the former convent space can be used for events and hospitality initiatives. The kitchens of the principality prepare wonderful risottos for visiting groups, obviously with local ingredients, but also with the very tasty local recipes.
